Mythic Iceland is a brand-new sourcebook for the Basic Roleplaying system, which is also the base system for the Call of Cthulhu RPG. It was written by the amazing Pedro Ziviani, an Icelandic historian. On a more casual note, it is 270 pages of role-playing flavorful goodness wrapped up in one book. Everything from history to language, magic to beasts, and family roles to Viking combat is covered in this book, and that isn’t even the tip of the iceberg. Ziviani assumes that the reader has no previous knowledge of Iceland, Vikings, or even mythical creatures in his explanations, and the book is laid out in a way to make the most cohesive sense to new role-players and storytellers (Keepers). I know I may be a geek for making this comparison, but it fulfills everything I look for in a chemistry textbook. It provides interesting anecdotes of what you can do with the information presented, gives you a tid-bit to get started, and then introduces you to advanced concepts when needed. It also provides many opportunities for branching from Icelandic history for alternate reality campaigns or campaigns which do not use magic. Continue reading
